Squash in the Community

Back in the 1980's most people knew what squash was, even though some had never played themselves. Ask an average class of 30 primary schoolchildren today what squash is and, frighteningly, only 1 or 2 will be able to describe it, let alone play it!

This is being redressed in the London and Surrey area with recently-appointed part-time Community Squash Coach, Jo Robinson, delivering the Mini Squash Programme to between 1,500-2,000 primary and secondary schoolchildren since September 2006.

Children aged between 6-15 years old from 19 schools in Thornton Heath, South Norwood, Croydon, Wallington, Carshalton and Guildford areas have enjoyed their first taste of squash in their School Halls or playgrounds with fun, progressive 5-6 week whole-class curriculum, 'taster' or After-School Club sessions, linked to the National Curriculum syllabus.

Using activities and special equipment from the Unsquashable Mini Squash Programme (FUNdation, Improver and Pro levels), different-sized racquets and soft balls are used to suit every age and ability and a Mini Squash rebound Wall helps to overcome the 'wall space' problem.

Coaching up to thirty children in each class session can sometimes be quite challenging but immensely rewarding. The children are not only learning about basic squash/hand-eye/physical co-ordination skills, but also important life skills such as working together in pairs, small groups, teamwork, co-operation, self-esteem, self-discipline, healthy lifestyles and, most important of all, that exercise of any kind can be fun!

At the end of each 'block' of sessions, the children are given information about local squash clubs/courses and 10 children from each school are invited to take part in an Inter-Schools Mini Squash Festival in the local squash club to give them an exciting experience of Team Squash challenges in a Club environment.

As part of her new role, Jo has also delivered group squash coaching at Trinity School, Croydon, to 150 specially-selected 10-11 year old 'gifted and talented' children as part of the Schools Sports Partnerships 'Rising Stars' Programme – future champions in the making.

Jo is one of 3,000 full and part-time multi-sports Community Sports Coaches nationally, delivering high-quality coaching and 'Team Teach' knowledge in schools and club settings, across all sections of the community.

Amongst other things, the aims of these CSC coaches are to enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities for schoolchildren for 2012 and beyond and to develop improved School/Club links as part of the Government's Physical Education School Sport Club Links (PESSCL) strategy.

Jo's CSC position is administered by the Surrey H & R C Partnership in conjunction with funding/resources from various partners - Surrey Squash & Racketball Association, London Sports Development Unit, Active Surrey and England Squash. The post also involves working closely with various School Sports Partnerships and Schools Competition Managers, as well as mentoring and supervising young Mini Squash Leader volunteers and assistant coaches.

Sincere thanks to the following members of the Surrey H & R C Partnership for their vision and commitment in establishing this CSC role - Pete Smith (Head Coach, Surrey Health & Racquets Club, Croydon), Rae Anderson (School Sports Co-ordinator, Croydon Sports Partnership), Nick Metcalf (former England Squash Area Squash Manager South East) and latterly his successor, Justyn Price.

Squash session feedback and demand from children and teachers in the schools has been extremely positive and it is now up to the Clubs themselves to take advantage of the resurgence and increased interest in squash generally by actively promoting their junior squash courses, team challenge events and holiday sports activities/schemes to those important people who ultimately influence how their children spend their free time – the parents and carers...

Recent Development in Surrey Squash

Development of squash in Surrey continues to progress with the help of many enthusiastic club volunteers and our new England Squash Area Manager, Nick Metcalf. The England Squash Club Charter Scheme continues to flourish and provides clubs in the county with a framework to develop.

The following clubs have obtained the following:
Gold: Esporta Health & Rackets, Varsity Squash & Tennis Club, Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club.
Silver: Ebbisham Squash Club, Purley Squash Rackets Club, Limpsfield LTC/Squash, Sandown Park Squash Club.
Bronze: Preston Cross Squash Club.

Ashtead Squash Rackets Club, Dorking Tennis/Squash Club, Dragons Health Club, Reigate Squash Club, Sutton Tennis & Squash Club, Woking Squash Rackets Club, Surbiton Squash Club and Wimbledon Lakeside are all, with Nick Metcalf's help, working to achieve their Club Charter status. This widespread participation in the scheme is extremely encouraging and must surely improve the standard of squash in Surrey.

Player Profile - David Wardle

Surrey's David Wardle gets a special mention in this edition following a fantastic recent run of results. The highlight was victory in the US Junior Open Under 13's, which was followed by victory in both the Scottish and Irish Junior Opens. Following a five game battle in the 3rd round David made a quarterfinal appearance in the British Open where he lost out in 5 games to the tournament runner-up. David and sister Emma received some welcome exposure for themselves and junior squash in a recent TV news feature and both are benefiting from regular attendance at the SE Area Academies.  South East Area Squash Academy

South East Area Academy - Stars of the future

South East Area Squash Academy  The England Squash Area Academies give talented young players the chance to receive some expert coaching and gain a real insight into what it takes to become a professional squash player. With selection based on National Rankings, County Closed and Area Closed results, players' form is monitored constantly over the season, ensuring that the best young talent gets a chance to train at the Academies. One of the goals is a chance to represent the South East in the Inter Area Academy Tournament at the National Squash Centre on April 8/9th, where the six Areas will battle it out and the youngsters will have the chance to impress the coaches and potentially progress to the National Academy set-up and ultimately to represent their country. Area Coach: Ian Robinson.

Club Charter - Developing Clubs for the Future

Two recent additions to the England Squash Chartered Club Network in the South East are reaping the rewards that the Club Charter can bring. Club Kingswood in Essex was recently awarded the Silver Club Charter in recognition of their effective club management and the wide range of National Coaching Scheme Programmes available at the Club. As a result Club Kingswood will be hosting the Under 17's and Under 13's Inter Counties Finals on 6t/7th May, giving all Club members the opportunity to witness top class action at their club. In Surrey, Ashtead Squash Club were recently presented with their Bronze Club Charter Award by England's young star James Willstrop, following an exhibition match between James and Anthony Ricketts. Ashtead have commenced with a range of taster sessions and Mini Squash programmes at local schools encouraging all youngsters to try out the game and allowing those with a taste for it to progress into the club's junior section.

You can register your Club for the Charter on www.esclubcharter.com or contact your Area Manager for more details.

Mini Squash

Mini Squash is also beginning to flourish, introducing the game to younger children. Many clubs are involved including Foxhills. Dragons Purley, Ebbisham, and Leatherhead Leisure centre, and work is in process on developing local Mini Squash circuits in areas where several clubs are promoting the game.

Graded Events

Graded Events are also beginning to take place across the county. These are for players who have registered their grade on the esgrading website and they play against players within the same grade at an open tournament. Clubs including Wimbledon Rackets & Fitness, Esporta Croydon and Ebbisham have run several highly successful graded tournaments which offer players a new level of competition and the chance to play against more diverse opposition.

Registered Coaches

All registered coaches have now received details regarding the coaches' licence and have been granted a provisional licence for a year. To receive their full licence, coaches must be qualified, insured and have attended First Aid, Child Protection and Equity training courses. The aim of this scheme which is being run by England Squash is to ensure that all coaches are trained to a level that matches the responsibility they hold. Nick is hoping to establish a Surrey Coaches Association in the near future, to help aid and support the development of coaches in the county.
